Introduction of a Hopeful Soon-To-Be Psychology Undergraduate Graduate
I'm a psychology/pre-pharmacy major. A lot of people think of therapists when they think of psych majors, but it is a very broad field with plenty of subfields (primarily based in research and statistics) of cognitive, industrial/organizational, forensic, neuro-, developmental, clinical, and social psychology (among others)! Some short-term goals are to graduate this May and attend pharmacy school. The best class I took last semester was my Spanish class because it was one of the last general education credits I needed where I can not really pick the course topic. The class was interesting and informative, but finally finishing it alleviated some stress.
I have recently been reading Michelle Obama's recent book 'Becoming'. It is quite popular right now it seems and I received it as a Christmas gift. So far I love it! I've always been fascinated with her journey and hearing it from her words is lovely.
I have a lot of favorite food, but my favorite food would probably have to be chocolate chip cookies. It might seem like a simple food, but I like the cookies to have a certain texture (crisp but not burnt on the edges and gooey but not like raw dough in the center) with a certain chocolate chip/dough ratio (though I never really can complain with more chips than dough). I will say I have more of a savory tooth than a sweet tooth. These are fun to make from scratch or from the pre-made packs.
Between work and school, I value having the time to just catch up with pop culture/hobbies. If I had an extra day for fun, I would honestly probably just watch a popular movie on Netflix that I've heard about. I think having those times for yourself to de-stress is critical!
Some other random information:
The last trip (around Thanksgiving) I went on was to Chicago. I actually never had been before. I was able to try deep dish pizza and see art from a contemporary artist I admire (Yayoi Kusama) among other activities and artists.
I live with a golden doodle dog named Leo
(picture of Leo I took)
He is quite mild-tempered for a two-year old and his favorite game is tug-of-war.
I can touch my tongue to my nose! (about 10% of the population can, but beware this statistic was pulled from Google).
Mmm...chocolate chip cookies..I love them as well! And exactly the way you described them, Maya. Nothing beats a warm cookie, perfectly baked and fresh out of the oven. Love the picture of your dog, but I had to look up what a golden doodle dog was. I never knew that golden retriever/poodle cross-breeds were a thing! You learn something everyday.
ReplyDeleteHey Maya,
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you mentioned Michelle Obama’s new book I have been really interested in reading it and I have heard only good things so far. I’m also so fascinated by your trip to Chicago, I have always wanted to go and it seems like its just far enough away that I haven’t had the opportunity to go! I love different art and history museums and its great you were able to see an artist you already knew. I am also in full agreement that everyone needs just a little while to relax and take a break with these busy college schedules!
Hi Maya!
ReplyDeleteLeo is so cute! I have a cat named Jasper. That's really cool you have a Psychology major, and I love that you mentioned how wide and diverse psychology can be as a field. I have a minor in Psych right now, and I am hoping to perhaps graduate with it as a second major. I want to read Michelle Obama's book as well, but haven't had the chance. Freshly baked cookies are the best. No lie, I have a package of Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookies in my cupboard to bake haha! And definitely congratulations on finishing with your general education credits. It was nice to meet you!
Chicago is super cool! I went there last year and it was an amazing experience, very beautiful city. Chocolate cookies are also top tier. Also you dog Leo is super cute! Look out because I might steal him!
ReplyDeleteThat combination of psychology and pre-pharmacy sounds great, Maya! I love it when a pharmacist is well-informed and can talk to you about medications, alert you to things to think about and notice... and having a background in psychology will be great for that! And reading about chocolate chip cookies here gave me a total flashback to the amazing chocolate chip cookies that my mom used to bake: she was not really a good cook, to be honest, but she did know how to bake the perfect chocolate chip cookie. I am sure you would have liked them!
ReplyDeleteAnd look at your Leo: what a sweetheart! I'm imagining him smiling at you like that because he also is impressed that you can touch your tongue to your nose, ha ha (my husband can too; I can't!). Maybe you will add Leo to the Pet Gallery; here's the "Pet Padlet" -- Padlet Tech Tips, which is a fun way to do an extra credit Tech Tip thing. :-)
Hi Maya, your dog is super cute and seems great. Psychology and pre-pharmacy seems like a great combination. It seems as though you have a lot of options for what to do with those degrees. I am glad you enjoyed your Spanish class last semester. Language classes are always a blast. Good luck this semester, and I hope you have fun in this class.
ReplyDeleteHey Maya. Chicago is one of the coolest cities I know. Maybe that's because I am biased, being from Illinois. Their deep dish pizza rivals all of the other pizzas! It's pretty nice how you are mixing psych with pharmacy as there seems to be a lot of interest in anti-depressants. My friend from Illinois is doing I/O and is looking at Tulsa so I definitely know about all the other fields of psych!
ReplyDeleteHi Maya! So nice to meet another fellow student majoring in psychology! I think it’s cool that you decided to go into pharmacy school instead of choosing to do something with psychology. I also definitely agree that its extremely important that you have time to de-stress! Netflix is probably a go-to destressor for me as well. What are some of your favorite movies to watch?
ReplyDeleteHello Maya,
ReplyDeleteOnce upon I was a psychology major, but I changed because it wasn't fit for me. I also enjoy chocolate chip cookies, but butterscotch noodle cookies are my favorite. Your pupper is really cute and I hope to have a dog in the future. I also feel you on the Netflix aspect, but I roll with Hulu because I don't have a Netflix account. Do you have any movie recommendations at all?
Hi Maya!
ReplyDeleteI am also a Psychology major, but I plan on applying to an accelerated nursing program once I get my degree in psychology. I think it's awesome that you want to go to pharmacy school! I also LOVE chocolate chip cookies, they are so simple, but SO good. They are my absolute favorite. Also, I have been wanting to read Michelle Obama's book, so definitely let me know how it is once you finish it! I am currently reading, "Girl, Wash Your Face" by Rachel Hollis. I love it so far! Also, LOVE the picture of the golden doodle. Leo is so cute! I loved reading and getting to know a little more about you!
Howdy Maya,
ReplyDeleteI learned that there are many options for careers in the psychology field from your introduction, which is interesting to me. I also 100% can relate to the de-stressing thing. I am always so confused when all my friends are talking about some Netflix show, and I am over here thinking when do you have time to watch all that? Leo is very adorable! Good luck in your last semester (I know it is kind of late...sorry)!
Hey there, Maya! I think your major sounds so impressive and interesting! My dad works in medicine as a doctor, dealing more with face-to-face service than research, but has a passion for learning and expanding on his understanding. I also watch a lot of Netflix and binge watch entire shows at a time. When school was cancelled yesterday, I really used all of my free time to play super smash bros and watch Netflix. Also, your dog is so precious!!
ReplyDeleteHey Maya! That's awesome you're planning to go to pharmacy school. I think studying psychology sounds so interesting, the human mind is very complicated and confusing at times. I had never thought of it but I think it would be interesting to study psychology and then go to pharmacy school. I am sure it would give you a unique perspective.
ReplyDeleteHi Maya,
ReplyDeleteI love how your personality really shines through your introduction post. You seem like a very mellow person who appreciates the simple things in life and doesn't take them for granted. I am also a psychology major, and I love learning about what other psychology majors plan on doing with their degree. Pharmacist is an occupation I had not heard before!
Hi Maya,
ReplyDeleteFirst of, I am so jealous that you got Michelle Obama's "Becoming" as a gift! I also prefer savory things over sweet but when I get the occasional sweet cravings I indulge. Your dog, Leo, is so solo cute! I cannot stress that enough! I also agree with the Netflix and just de stressing and taking a day fro yourself. Its important to reset! Over all, It was nice to read a bit about you!
Hey Maya I enjoyed reading your introduction post! I like the picture of your dog, Leo. Did you adopt him? He looks like a pretty sweet boy! Leo looks like a mix of a golden retriever and lab. Best of luck graduating this year! I am super jealous only one more year to go for myself. Also best of luck in pharmacy school and your future endeavors!
ReplyDeleteHey Maya,
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your introduction! Michelle Obama's book sounds so interesting! I might just have to read it soon. I am also in love with chocolate chip cookies, especially pizookies! My roommates and I made a pizookie from scratch once and it was absolutely amazing. I hope you have a successful last semester at OU, and good luck with pharmacy school!
Hi Maya! I used to be a psych major but I didn't enjoy the classes as much as I thought I would to continue it as a major, instead I wanted something more hands-on like Microbiology. However, I have two more classes to minor in psych so I'm going to take a few more. Do you have any suggestions for upper level psych classes? Also your doggo is super cute! I love when dogs smile for the camera!!
ReplyDeleteHello Maya! I love the photo of your dog! I have two Corgis, Stormageddon Dark Lord of All and Sindri, who are about eight and a half months old! They are a handful but I'm sure you know they mean a lot! I'm glad you read Michelle Obama's book! I didn't end up reading it mostly because of the really intense hype. I might read it later but memoirs/autobiographies have never really been my thing. I'm a history major so I read about people's lives every day for not so much fun.
ReplyDeleteHi Maya,
ReplyDeleteI can talk forever to you about chocolate chip cookies. My grandma makes the best (but so do all grandmas). They are just soooo good. I am glad that you clarified that being a psychology major actually gives someone a lot of career options. My cousin is at grad school in Seattle for industrial psychology. I really enjoy talking to him about what he is learning. I wish you the best with pharmacy school. Medicine is something that is super important to me as I someday would like to be a dentist.
First of all, that dog is stunning and adorable. Second of all, cookies are the bomb and are better than brownies. I think it's a very respectable favorite food. What's the best chocolate chip cookie you've ever had? I don't think I've had one so perfect it's blown my mind but I've definitely had a few that make my mouth water, especially if they'd just come out of the oven warm with a glass of milk...
ReplyDeleteHey Maya,
ReplyDeleteI am also a psychology major so I can understand your passion. I agree when people think that psychology is simply being therapist. At least that’s what my family in India thought when I told them what I was going to do with my life. Also, I love chocolate chip cookies as well. I find myself going to Insomnia cookies a lot lately too. Anyway, hope you have a great rest of the semester.
Hey Maya,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed that you wrote about the many sub-fields of psychology, as I never knew how many things you could do with that degree, it sounds super interesting! Also, I am 100% with you on the chocolate chip cookie thing. A good desert doesn't have to be fancy or caked (no pun intended) with chocolate and caramel, sometimes the best things are the simple things. Also, if you liked the deep dish in Chi town, you got to venture over to south Philly/Jersey sometime. We got some of the best pizza in the country!
Hey Maya!
ReplyDeleteIt was great getting to meet you through your intro! My roommate is a psych major and she shares a lot about the interesting things she learns about. I took a psychology class in high school. I really liked it. I wish i had time to take classes at OU but I have soo many classes to take and so little time. Maybe someday I can wiggle one in. Good luck with school!
Hey Maya,
ReplyDeleteI think it’s awesome that you’re pursuing pharmacy. I’m sure it must be challenging but it’s definitely a good field to be in. Also, I agree with you about chocolate chip cookies. I love chocolate chip cookies but only if they’re a specific way. Reading your description of cookies made me crave some! Leo is so cute so thank you for sharing that picture. Best of luck with the rest of your semester!
Hi Maya! I love chocolate chip cookies too. I would say they are my favorite ones besides maybe snickerdoodles. Your dog is really cute also. You also described the perfect way to have a chocolate chip cookie. I want to have a soft center with just perfect edges. They are hard to bake in my opinion, but if you know a good way to cook them please respond!
